Herbivorv in Australian Forests - A comp&-ison of Dry Sclerophyll and Rain Forest Canopies
نویسنده
چکیده
Long-term measurements of insect grazing in the canopies of different Australian forest types were compared over 10 years. Forest types included rain forests (cool temperate, warm temperate, and subtropical) and dry sclerophyll, all situated within a 50 km radiusofArmidale, New South Wales. Similar methods of marking and measuring leaves in tree canopies were employed, and similar modes of analyses were executed after the leaf lifespan was completed. Grazing levels for a forest stand ranged from as low as 5 8% annual foliage consumption to 300% (when three successive flushes were grazed). Contrary to earlier literature, this long term, community level study shows that herbivory in forest canopies is extremely variable both at intraand inter-site spatial scales.

Armillaria Root Rot in Eucalypt Forests: Aggravated Endemic Disease!
Species of the woody root rot fungus Armillaria are indigenous in cool temperate rain forest, mixed forest, and wet and dry sclerophyll eucalypt forests in Australia. Four species have been described or identified from southeastern Australia: A. luteobubalina Watling and Kile, A. fumosa Kile and Watling, A. hinnulea Kile and Watling, and A. novae-zelandiae (Stevenson) Boesewinkel. The latter sp...
متن کاملDegraded tropical rain forests possess valuable carbon storage opportunities in a complex, forested landscape
Tropical forests are major contributors to the terrestrial global carbon pool, but this pool is being reduced via deforestation and forest degradation. Relatively few studies have assessed carbon storage in degraded tropical forests. We sampled 37,000 m(2) of intact rainforest, degraded rainforest and sclerophyll forest across the greater Wet Tropics bioregion of northeast Australia. We compare...
متن کاملShort-Term Exposure to Warm Microhabitats Could Explain Amphibian Persistence with Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis
Environmental conditions can alter the outcomes of symbiotic interactions. Many amphibian species have declined due to chytridiomycosis, caused by the pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), but many others persist despite high Bd infection prevalence. This indicates that Bd's virulence is lower, or it may even be a commensal, in some hosts. In the Australian Wet Tropics, chytrid...

Trees in many forests affect the soils below their canopies. Analysis of the relationships between trees and soil is one of the basic factors in management and planning of forests. Zagros forest ecosystem is one of the main degrading forest ecosystems in Iran and plays an important role in soil protection. Quercus brantii is the most important woody species in these forests. This study was cond...
متن کاملDoes soil determine the boundaries of monodominant rain forest with adjacent mixed rain forest and maquis on ultramafic soils in New Caledonia?
Within-stand species richness of tropical rain forests is typically high, so that it is not unusual for more than 200 species, including more than 100 tree species, to coexist within 1 ha of tropical rain forest (Whitmore, 1984; Gentry, 1988). However, not all tropical forests have high species richness. Forests growing in suboptimal environments can have reduced richness of higher plants, some...
